[3.1] Recycling Program for Waste
Politeknik Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah (POLISAS) in collaboration with Solid Waste And Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) have implementing recycling program for waste. This program allows all types recyclables (plastic, paper, glass, aluminum) to be placed in the same container, making it easier for the user. Three types of recycle bins have been placed in an easily passable location in POLISAS to make it easier for students to remove the recycled items.
[3.2] Program Banning The Use of Polystyrene In Campus
Politeknik Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah (POLISAS) have implemented “Polisas Free From Polystyrene” campaign towards banning the use of polystyrene in campus. Polystyen contains tirena and benzene that can affect the environment for which these harmful substances are 500 years to be destroyed naturally. Furthermore, the findings conducted by the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER) in 1992 showed that polyspherine made from HCFC-22 could potentially
threaten the environment 3 to 5 times higher than other wastes. The ban on the use of polystyrene should be the attention of all parties. It is difficult to expect society to make drastic changes if no aggressive efforts are practiced in eliminating the use of polystyrene. Therefore, POLISAS are taking steps to assist the environment by banning the use of polystyrene.
[3.3] Compost Fertilizer
Politeknik Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah (POLISAS) in collaboration with Solid Waste And Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) have organized a compost fertilizer production programme from food waste. SWcorp provides training and tutoring on the production of compost fertilizer that can be done in police. The production of compost fertilizer is carried out in food processing laboratories using food waste used by students during their practical class. Through this program, students are trained to reduce waste used in the laboratory. At the same time, students can convert the waste into something that can be used in tree planting.
[3.4] E-waste Recycle
Politeknik Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah (POLISAS), one of the e-Waste collection centres also promotes the recycling of Electronic Waste in collaboaration with Jabatan Aalam Sekitar and Senheng Electric Sdn Bhd (Senheng). E-waste items should not be disposed of in the normal trash due to their high concentrations of toxic chemicals and heavy metals. More aggressive awareness campaigns need to be done in the country to expose the public on the correct method of disposal of electronic wastes to avoid the occurrence of threats to the environment. A total of 700,000 metric tonnes of e-Waste from households, business sectors and related institutions are produced on average in the country each year. Nevertheless, with the availability of e-Waste collection centres as launch in POLISAS, hopefully people are more sensitive to environmental care aspects and no longer remove their electronic goods that are not already in use in places that should not be. In Malaysia, there are an act involving this e-Waste waste and it is listed as a (waste) scheduled waste in accordance with the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005.
